Optimization of the sludge stabilization (with lime) at the Givors WWTP: A sustainable collaboration between Veolia and Sodimate

The Givors Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is managed by SYSEG (Syndicat mixte pour la Station d’Épuration de Givors) and operated by VEOLIA, is a critical facility dedicated to treating wastewater for the region.

Originally commissioned in two stages in 1994 and 2004, the plant treats wastewater from 16 municipalities and has a nominal treatment capacity of 89,733 population equivalents (p.e.).

Since the WWTP was built, Sodimate has supplied equipment for for lime dosing and conveying sewage sludge. After many years and in order to optimise the overall process following recurrent blockages of the feed pumps under the centrifuges, Veolia requested Sodimate to work jointly to enhance the layout and efficiency of the sludge treatment system.

The goal of sludge liming is to stabilize the sludge and control odors by limiting microorganisms. This process also reduces moisture content, making the sludge easier to handle, store, and transport. Additionally, liming stabilizes the organic matter, making it suitable for potential land application, particularly in agriculture.

Therefore, in 2023, Sodimate supplied :

  • A mechanical bin activator under the silo, based its patented Arch Breaker technology for lime extraction;
  • A lime injection screw for precise and controlled lime dosing for sludge stabilization;
  • Three conveyors screws for efficient transfer of dewatered sludge from the centrifuges;
  • A hopper to connect the feeding pump and the Sodimate equipment (lime and sludge units).

This retrofit has minimized operational interruptions, improved sludge stabilization, and reduced the moisture content in treated sludge, facilitating easier handling and disposal. As a result, working conditions for operators have improved, ensuring the continuity and sustainability of the sludge treatment process at the Givors WWTP.
