remineralization

Remineralization of drinking water: Sodimate solutions

Following advanced treatment processes such as reverse osmosis or nanofiltration, the resulting water is extremely pure—but also aggressive. It contains very few minerals, which can lead to pipeline corrosion, pH instability, and deterioration in the quality of the distributed water.

Remineralization allows for the reintroduction of essential mineral elements into the water, particularly calcium, to stabilize the water, correct its pH, and ensure its long-term potability.

Standards and regulations concerning remineralization vary by country and depend on the authorities responsible for drinking water quality. These regulations often set limits on added mineral concentrations and require strict quality control procedures.

Understanding the remineralization process

Main objectives:

  • pH correction: Osmosed water is often acidic (pH < 7). Remineralization adjusts it toward a neutral or slightly alkaline level (pH 7.5–8).
  • Increase in hardness (TH): To avoid excessively soft and corrosive water.
  • Water stabilization: To prevent corrosion or scaling phenomena in distribution networks.

Sodimate equipment at the core of the treatment chain

Sodimate offers robust, fully integrated technical solutions tailored to the needs of drinking water production facilities.

  • Reagent storage
Silo or big bag station for hydrated lime or calcium carbonate.
  • Extraction and dosing
Using Sodimate’s shaftless screw feeders, which prevent clogging and ensure accurate, continuous dosing.
  • Preparation of lime milk
Production of a homogeneous and stable lime slurry in an agitated preparation tank, with concentration control and suspension maintenance.
  • Injection into the process
Pumped into an osmosis water pipeline or a contact basin.
  • Online monitoring
pH, hardness, and alkalinity sensors for real-time dosage adjustment.
