MICROPOLLUTANT
TREATMENT

The problem of PFAS and micropollutants

Micropollutants (pharmaceutical residues, endocrine disruptors, pesticides, etc.) and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances) are at the heart of today’s environmental challenges. These emerging pollutants are difficult to eliminate by conventional water treatment processes, due to their chemical stability and persistence in the environment.

To meet these challenges, advanced solutions such as adsorption on activated carbon, in the form of powdered activated carbon (PAC) or microgranular activated carbon (CAG µgrains), are implemented in drinking water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), particularly during tertiary or quaternary treatment.

The Sodimate solution for PFAS and micropollutant treatment

At Sodimate, we offer complete, modular systems for the storage, dosing and transfer of activated carbon, whether in powder form (CAP) or in micrograins (CAG µgrains).

Our equipment is designed to meet the specific requirements of water treatment plants and guarantee safe, precise and regular feeding of adsorption processes.

In recent years, this method has been gradually replaced by a simpler, more compact solution: in-line transfer of powdered activated carbon via a hydroejector, enabling CAP to be injected directly without the need for a preparation stage.

Our equipment for micrograins activated carbon (µgrains GAC) and fluidized bed reactors

Micro-grained activated carbon is used in fluidized-bed reactors for the continuous treatment of PFAS, endocrine disruptors and other micropollutants contained in drinking water or wastewater.

Sodimate offers a complete system for feeding these reactors:

  • Silo or big-bag emptying stand for microgranular activated carbon storage
  • Mechanical bin activator and weight doser for controlled extraction
  • Volumetric or weight feeder to reactor
  • Micrograin activated carbon fining system, designed to eliminate fines and guarantee optimum loading in the reactor thanks to our Sodimicrocarb system.

The aim is to feed the reactor with a quality, fines-free activated carbon charge to ensure effective adsorption of micropollutants and PFAS in the customer’s reactor.

Examples of completed installations

Sodimate has assisted numerous local authorities and industrial companies in the implementation of activated carbon dosing systems for the treatment of PFAS and micropollutants:

  • SANOFI’s Vertolaye WWTP – France: installation of a complete powdered activated carbon dosing system with hydroejector for treatment of drug residues (endocrine disruptors).
  • Montpellier VALEDEAU drinking water plant: silo storage of micro-grained activated carbon, with defining system and feed to a fluidized bed reactor.
  • Montauban drinking water plant: silo storage of micro-grain activated carbon, fed into a fluidized bed reactor.
  • Tournefeuille drinking water plant: silo storage of micro-grained activated carbon, fed into a fluidized bed reactor.
  • Virecourt drinking water plant: big-bag storage of micro-grain activated carbon, with defining system and fluidized bed reactor feed.

Our solutions can be adapted to any context: urban WWTPs, drinking water plants, industrial effluents, mobile or temporary treatment…
